Wow! The last week before winter break is here. I cannot believe how fast time has gone. They do say "Time flies when you are having fun" and I guarantee we have been having some fun in class!
I have a few reminders for you this week:
The choir concert will be in the South Gym Tuesday evening at 7pm. You are more than welcome to come listen to these wonderful singers we have!
Our secret gift exchange is going to take place on Thursday. Please have your child bring in their gift by Wednesday. If you need ideas with this please let me know!
We are also going sledding Thursday afternoon as part of our Winter Party. If you would like to bring in a sled you may bring it in any time this week. Sleds cannot go on the bus.
As for academics this week we are working on mean, median, mode and range. We are practicing these skills through many different activities. For reading, we are working on critical thinking and manipulating words through a strategy of "Hink Pinks." This is fun and challenging for the kiddos. There will be no spelling this week-which the kids have expressed excitement about :)
As you may know, I have been focusing on Kindness the last week or so. I am trying to show that there are always opportunities to be kind to others and to take advantage of those opportunities. I have noticed a change in how the kids treat each other (in a good way) and I hope to extend that through the rest of the school year.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and enjoy spending time with family. Your kids have truly been a delight to have this year. I look forward to seeing them January 3rd!

Greetings!
We have a full week of learning ahead of us.
We are switching gears in both math and reading for the next couple of weeks.
In math, we are going to be doing a Bottle Flipping project that will help us learn about probability and keeping accurate data. We will also be learning about mean, median, mode and range with the data that will be collected.
As for reading, we are going to do a little writing project dealing with the different points of view. I am looking forward to seeing how creative the kiddos can be as they have the chance to work their magic with technology.
For Social Studies, we will be wrapping up our Native American Tribe project and the kids will be presenting their work to their peers sometime this week and next.
We will be having Holiday Party Thursday, December 22nd. Just a reminder that we are doing a secret gift exchange where the students are to buy a maximum $5 gift for their selected peer. If you need assistance with this in any way, please let me know.
Also, we are planning to go sledding at school as a part of our class Holiday Party. I am asking for parents to help out and bring in any sleds for your child to use. Parents will need to bring the sleds to school and make arrangements to pick them up. Sleds cannot go on the bus.
As always, please encourage your child to read every night as well as practice their spelling words. It really makes a difference in their learning!
Thank you for all you do to help out!
Have a wonderful week!

Happy Monday!
Well the month of December is well underway. I cannot believe it is already this far into the school year!
Last week, I sent home information on our secret gift exchange that our class will be doing. The kids have already picked a person's name that they will find a gift for. I am asking that the maximum amount to spend is $5. Your child can bring in the wrapped gift whenever they have it ready to go. Please let me know if I can assist you in any way.
For academics- we are going to wrap up Chapter 3 in math and take a test this Friday. Next week, we will be moving on to Data and Analysis.
The kiddos just finished their book club on Friday. This week we are going to focus on Author's Purpose as well as Point of view.
We have been working very hard on the research project about Native American Tribes. I am hoping to complete this by this week or next and have the kiddos present their tribe to their classmates before the posters are hung in the wall.
As always, encourage your child to read for their AR points. We have a class reward if everyone meets their goal for this quarter.
Also, I have noticed that our spelling tests are not as good as they should be. We do practice some in school, but the kiddos need to practice some on their own as well. They get a copy of the words every Monday and you can also find them on the class website.
Have a great week!

Happy Monday!
I hope you all enjoyed the long holiday weekend!
We should have a fairly normal week ahead of us.
For Social Studies, the kiddos are working on researching a Native American Tribe. They are becoming experts on the tribe and will create a poster to prsent to the class. Once they are completed they will be in the hallway on display for others to see.
I am hoping to wrap up Chapter 3 for math. It seems that the kids have a very good handle on multiplying fractions. We will be having Chapter 3 test late this week or early next week.
The focus for reading this week will be author's purpose. The kids will try to find the reason the author wrote what they did and the message they are trying to get across.
Have a great week!

Wow is time flying!
This week's note will be somewhat brief.
We will have a short school week due to the holiday on Thursday. The kiddos will be getting out of school early on Wednesday.
We are continuing to work on multiplying fractions in math. This seems to be going fairly well. Just a reminder-I have posted a couple of helpful math links on the class website. If your kiddo needs some help with their work they can always check those sites out!
For reading, we are in full swing of our Book Club. The kids are being held accountable for their role and participation during their group discussions. Please keep encouraging your child to read at home as well.
We have started a research project on Native American Tribes in Social Studies. The kids are with a partner and learning all about a tribe that they have chosen. They will create a poster with all of the information they have found and will be displayed in the hallway.
Thank you for participating in Stuff-A-Truck, Book Fair and the school Fundraiser. They were all such a great success!
Report Cards were also sent home last Friday.
Have a great week!

Book Orders from Scholastic will be due November 30th.
This is the last week for Stuff-A-Truck. All food items will be collected Thursday this week. Thank you for donating!
To the Academics for this week. In Math we are going to be working with Multiplying and different strategies students can use to solve problems.
In reading we are continuing to work on figurative language. I have encouraged students to listen and look for similes, metaphors, idioms, hyperboles and personification in their every day lives. I am amazed how much we use figurative language every day!
For Social Studies we are switching gears to learn about Native American tribes. We are going to do some research to become more knowledgeable about the people who have lived in North America for so many years.
Thank you for all your support thus far! It takes great team work to make our kiddos succeed!

Hey all!
What a BEAUTIFUL fall we have had so far! I am absolutely loving this weather.
I, first, wanted to thank all of you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet with me for your child's conference. I truly enjoy speaking with you to get to know about your child a little better while discussing their hard work so far this year. So thank you again, I appreciate it!
This week is a busy one. Our class is holding the school election tomorrow Nov. 8th. They have been working really hard decorating and learning about the process. Please remind them to wear red, white or blue tomorrow for the election.
Thursday at 9am our school is invited to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for our Diversity Trail as the new signs are being dedicated. They are beautiful signs.
As far as academics, we will have a spelling test this Friday. The words were handed and sent out last Monday and they are also on the class website.
We are going to have our second math test on Thursday this week. The test will be covering the decimals that we have learned about.
In reading, we are to learn about figurative language, which consists or similes, metaphors, hyperboles, idioms, and personification. We plan to start our next book club a week from today.
For Social Studies, we are going to wrap up the election process and discuss the outcome of the election. We are also going to discuss Veteran's Day, which is this Friday.
Finally, the end of the quarter is Friday, Nov. 11. All assignments need to be turned in by Friday to receive credit for it. Please expect the see report cards within the next week or so.
Have an awesome week!

Happy Halloween!!
Having Halloween on a Monday is quite the trick. I am looking forward to meeting with all of your for conferences this week. I truly enjoying talking with you about the progress your child is making and get to know you a little better. It makes a major difference when we can communicate.
We are going to do a class picture re-take to include all of our students. We had a few missing and have had a new student since then.
Our second math test will likely be next week. This chapter has been great as the students seem to really understand fractions. The grade book is up to date as of Monday morning, so please be sure to check out the grades for your child.
We finished our second Book Club last Friday. This week we are going to work a little more on Inferences and begin our next book club next Monday. I believe the kiddos are enjoying talking and learning with their peers with the books they have chosen.
The end of the quarter is Nov. 11th, which is one week from this Friday. We will talk about grades at conferences.
I think that is all for now!
See you this week!

Happy Monday!
I hope you were able to enjoy a few days with your kiddos. The 4 day weekend went by way too fast.
We are plugging along in both math and reading. This week in math we are going to continue to work on decimals. The kids say this is much easier than fractions (I must agree!).
In reading we are going to finish up our second book club on Friday. I think they are really enjoying reading these books and talking with their group about the things they have learned or have found interesting. Our focus for the week is Inferencing. This is a tough skill and we will be working on it for a few weeks. The spelling test will be on Friday- make sure to study some at home.
Reminder that conferences are next week-please get the conference slip turned in so I can confirm the scheduled time to meet with you.
The end of the quarter is November 11th, which is coming up quick. Students need to reach their AR goal as it is a part of their reading grade.
Our Fall Party is this Friday, October 28th with the Fall Festival that evening. Students can wear Orange and Black to school on Friday and can wear an appropriate costume to the Fall Festival.
Have a great week!

Hey all!
The weeks are really flying by. I cannot believe it is already the middle of October. The next couple of weeks are going to be pretty busy. This week we will not have school Thursday and Friday. Next Friday, October 28th we will have our Fall Party during the school day. That evening will be the Fall Festival at school. The first week in November will be Parent/Teacher Conferences. I sent Conference Slips home last Friday. Please let me know if the scheduled time works or if we need to meet another time.
We are moving on to Decimals in math for our second unit. We will be introduced to calculators this week to help with the understanding of decimals.
In reading, we are continuing to work on our Book Club. They kids are really getting the hang of having good discussions with their peers about the books they are reading.
We will not have a spelling test this week, however, students will get the new words for next week. Please encourage your child to practice them at home. I do realize they are tough words.
Book Orders are due Monday, October 31st. Students received a coupon where if they spend $10 they will receive a free book with a value up to $5.
As of Friday, all grades have been updated. Feel free to check Skyward for those grades.

Happy Monday!
We are off to a fast and furious start! It's hard to believe that we have been in school for over a month!
We will have our first math test this week. I think it will be either Thursday or Friday. We will have a review day before the test as there is a lot of material to cover. Last week, students were introduced to MobyMax, which is a website where students can practice math. It has other subject areas as well, but for right now we are focusing on the math portion. They have username and login that was provided at school.
For reading, our focus this week will be Main Idea. We are moving on to our next Book Club session. Students were able to choose from a group of books which one they would like to read next. They will be reading the same book as 3-4 other classmates and be assigned a role for each day. The kids have done a nice job so far. My plan is to alternate between Book Club and a project throughout the year.
In Social Studies, we started planning for our school-wide election. Our class will be in charge of setting up and running the mock election in our school. This week, we will decide on jobs and what materials may be needed. They are so excited and have many great ideas. Our focus for the election is to learn about the process of becoming President.
Bemidji School District is participating in "One District, One Book." This will be introduced to kids today and will receive a copy of "The World According to Humphrey." Information on the activity will be sent home, and from what I have gathered, it is a family activity-- Have fun with it!!
As always, the spelling words are posted on the website, and a copy has been sent home.
Have a great week!

Hello!
I hope everyone was able to enjoy the weather the last few days. It sure was beautiful!
We are going to finish up Unit 1 in math this week and will have our first test next week. This is a hard unit to start the year off with, but we are making progress. I will be introducing extra math practice to the kids this week. It is an online program where the students will have log in information and lessons assigned. There will be opportunity for them to practice in school, but can have access to do it at home too.
Our first Book Club has started off well! Students are assigned to read 15 pages in school and write a summary of those pages when they are done. If this is not completed in school, it will be homework. Our focus for our Book Club this week is Character Traits and work on small group discussion.
We finished up our 3 Branches of Government last week. The students created posters of a branch and presented to the class. They did an awesome job at this and it is sometimes difficult to work in small groups. We will be learning about the election process and be gearing up for the mock election in the beginning of November.
Just a reminder that students are encouraged to read their AR book and practice their spelling words at home. We do have limited time for both of those activities in school, but for students to be successful they should find time to do it at home as well. Make sure to check out the class website for the "Helpful Websites" for fun spelling activities and extra math help.
Thank you for all your help in making the kiddos successful!

Happy Fall!
We are really getting into the swing of things as we progress through the year.
As a class, we are working on becoming active listeners. This is an important life skill, and we need to put a focus on hearing what others say and how to respond when we agree or disagree. To practice this skill, we are participating in listening activities during morning meeting and working in pairs and small groups.
In math, we are continuing to work on fractions. This week's lessons are adding and subtracting unlike fractions. I am looking at our first math test to be late next week.
For reading, we have started our first Book Club. For our first book, we are reading "The Homework Machine." We will be learning how to have a book talk with a small group as well as reading skills. Our skill focus this week will be Compare and Contrast.
For Social Studies, I am hoping to finish up our 3 Branches of Government this week and move into the election process. Our class will be in charge of holding a mock election for our school in November.
I have posted some helpful websites on the class website. These links will allow students to practice their spelling words, have extra math practice as well as math videos to help with those tricky concepts. I will be adding websites as I come across useful ones.
Friday is a busy day as students are able to wear their favorite hat on Friday to help fundraise for our Inclusive Playground, the PTO movie night showing "Zootopia" is at 6pm and the fundraiser kickoff will be this Friday, September 30th. Fundraiser packets will be sent home that day.
Also, book orders are due this Friday, September 30th. You can either send the paper form into me or order online. Our class code is P7Q33.
As always, please contact me with questions or comments you may have.
Have a great week!

Happy Monday!
The last two weeks have flown by!
We have quite a few things going on this week. Today, we will have a guest speaker from Shane's Inspiration to talk with us about the Paul Bunyan Inclusive playground. Tomorrow, we will go to the playground at 9:15. Please make sure to turn in permission slips if you haven't done so yet.

Happy Monday!
We are getting into the full swing of things this week. We are starting our math with fractions. My goal is to give students enough time in class to complete their work. Students will rarely have math work to bring home if they are on task while doing their work. There will be spelling this week as we start our first story. The spelling list is under the spelling tab on the class website. Students were also given a list to have in their desks. Our spelling tests will always be on Fridays. In Social Studies, we will be focusing on the Constitution and how it was created.
This week a few book orders were sent home. Our class code is P7Q33. You can either order online or send in the order form with money attached and I will send it in for you. The due date for this order is Friday, September 30th.
Have a great week!

Dear Parents:
I was happy to meet many of you at Orientation last week. I can’t believe school has already started, but I was ready to come back. I thought I would send out a letter to you to give you a heads-up on what to expect this year with your child in my classroom.
I plan to use a free phone App to communicate called Remind. It will be used to send mass reminders to parents of important events happening in the classroom, tests, quizzes and homework assignments. I will send messages through this app and you will receive the message as a text. You will be able to send messages to me through this medium as well. The information is only viewed by me and no phone numbers are shared in this process. This is something new that I am trying out and I would like your feedback.
If you are interested in this app please follow these steps:
In your text messages,
enter this number: 81010
text this message: @mrslugga
You will then be asked to message your first and last name and asks you to respond if you are a student, parent or teacher. Finally, it will send you a link to install the app. You have the option of opted out of this at any time. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me.
I know this was a lot of information, but I am hoping to find ways to best communicate with you as parents and get you the information you need. Please let me know if you have any questions. You can reach me at carley_luggar@bemidji.k12.mn.us or (218) 333-3240.
I look forward to working with you this school year!

The next two weeks are short weeks. We do not have school this Friday, March 25th and Monday March 28th. We will have spelling, but have it stretched over the two weeks. So students will get their words today and will test on them Friday, April 1st.

We will have Math Madness April 1st from 1:45-2:45. Parents are welcomed to come in and learn some math games that you can play with your child. We will have an online activity to teach as well as a hands on activity.
Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA Testing) will begin the week of April 11th. We will start with the reading test and then move on to Math and sneak Science in there at the end of April. A good breakfast is always helpful, especially the day of testing. Once I receive the final testing schedule, I will send home a copy.
I hope you have a great long weekend. I know I am looking forward to spending time with my family!

If your child hasn't turned in a permission slip, please do as soon as you can. Also, I sent home a lunch form with the students. If you child needs the school to provide a lunch for our Friday field trip please fill out and return the form.
Conference slips were in last week's Tuesday packet. Please fill out the best time to meet and have your child return it to me.
Report Cards are sent home in Tuesday packets this week. If you have any questions please let me know.
We do not have school Monday Feb. 15th due to President's Day.
Have a great week!

Good morning!
Thank you to those who returned the slip letting me know what works best for communication! If you haven't done so please do! It is extremely helpful to know which way to communicate with you as parents.
We have a busy few weeks a head of us. We do not have spelling this week due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day and our Spelltacular being held on Friday. The top 5 students from my class will be competing with the other 5th grade classes in our building. We will be doing the 5th grade Lincoln spelldown Friday at 9:15.
We have our Mega Party for the fundraising students have done earlier this year. We are still looking for 5th grade parent volunteers to help out with the event. Please contact me if interested or return the green sheet.
The end of the quarter is creeping up on us. January 29th to be exact. As a class, the students are working really hard to get their AR goal for a class reward. Please encourage them to read at home to help them reach their goal.
In Social Studies, we are going to finish up our chapter of American Exploration. I am planning a test for next Wednesday January 27th.
Have a great, short week!

We will not be having a normal spelling list this week. We
are getting ready for the Spelltacular. Mrs. Brown is giving the written test
Tuesday and we will do our classroom spelldown on Friday the 15th. The following Friday we will have our 5th
grade spelldown. The top 2 spellers in the 5th grade will then go on
to compete with students from other schools.
In Social Studies, we are learning about Exploration of the
Americas as well as technology at that time in History. We will be discussing
what life was like before the Europeans came to the Americas.
The students are taking their OPLA reading test this week in
Tech.
**Remember, we do NOT have school next Monday, January 18th
due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
**The end of the quarter is January 29.
